Open Source Projects
To help secure a clients network we utilized services that protect our users and allow us to monitor the use of Internet resources. We have attempted to use paid services and network appliances as well as Open Source solutions. We have utilized Windows as well as Unix-type operating systems. It is our opinion, open source solutions are of equal or better quality than many commercial and at least the cost is lower. We have found that open source is highly scalable an configurable. Our biggest concern with open source is the lack of documentation on some programs and that it does take more time to configure.
These documents will describe how to set up
FreeBSD from the Internet to run ,
Squid
as a content filter with
Samba 3
for proxy authenitcation,
Samba 4
as an alternative to Windows for a domain controller,
Postfix
as an email filter and
Apache
as a reverse proxy.
Along the way there will be some management features added such as
Webmin
and a network logging server.
